There are many excellent leadership books available that are written about the onboarding timeframe and ideas for ensuring success—both for the new leader and for the organization itself. Unfortunately; it’s my experience that most leaders are simply unable to take enough time to absorb this material once they are already in the thick of transition. My clients have taught me that it is valuable for them to stop and take some time to reflect on their own learning but that an overload of new information—on top of what they are ploughing through about their new role and environment—is simply not practical.
